Iceland 1-Sweden 4

Hey Hey Hey,

I haven't been able to blog for the last two weeks and I decided about a week ago that I would blog at earliest on Monday (yesterday). The reason is that I've been extremely busy and the 24 hours that are in the day haven't sufficient at the moment. The story:

About month ago I went to a meeting with the FA about going to see Iceland-Sweden on the 13 of October. The hole that I thought found was that Icelanders aren't supporting well but they like to. So the idea was to get many people to go to the match, buy tickets, get financial supporters and get somekind of a hype for the match so everybody would sing along. On the Monday I came back from Hungary I went to work on this and I barely came to school for 2 weeks. We had t'ill the end of the week to get all our supporters to sign on because we were going on the morning show dressed in T-shirts with our supporters name on it and they had to be printed before noon on Friday. So the weekend we mate a songbook to be printed for everybody who came to the match (7.000 copies). On Monday I went to the TV interview and in the following three days I had 3 TV interviews, 5 radio interviews and 2 newspapers interviews.

On the matchday we had rented a bar close to the arena and then we went to the match which was great fun but unfortunately we were 0-4 under on 35th minute so getting everyone involved in singing wasn't easy. In the end it was a great experience to produce such an event, meeting important people and getting something renumberable to the CV.

The problem in this all was that I had 3 tests while doing this and 1 the day after the match and on yesterday I had statistics test which is the hard course this semester. I didn't sleep much the night before but I think I aced it.

On Friday I had to go to a sience trip (if I haven't told everybody what it is, it is a excursion to a company where they tell us a bit about their company and we get all the free beer we want). I had to go because it was going to my company (the bank I work in) but I was worried because I had this test on Monday.

Anyways I got a lot of people coming up to me talking about seeing me on TV so this a secure hussle factor.

Later,
Úlli

Awesome!!

Was watching "101 Most Awesome Moments in Entertainment" and thinking about how stereotypical you guys would find it if you saw it. I had to laugh at the way they said awesome in the title of the show--reminded me of Octavio. Watching the Yankees-Red Sox series right now--absolutely huge here in the States. I noticed when I was overseas that you can find Yankees hats everywhere (in 8 different colors in Ireland), but the thing about the Yankees is they're the most hated team in America everywhere but New York City. Like Chel$ea, they have a rich owner who signs the best team money can buy. Boston, on the other hand, hasn't won a World Series since Babe Ruth was still playing (1918 to be exact), a drought second only to my Cubs, who haven't won one since 1908.

Hoping to see Tim Howard rebound soon in Manchester...he's disappointing a lot of Americans.

Nobels for Everyone!!

Vegard, that's pretty cool about your teacher. We had 2 Nobel prize winners at my uni last year, but they were in medicine and physics, so I've never had them for class or even seen them for that matter. Pretty cool that he found out right in front of you. Svana, as for uncoolest being a word, I say you go for it. I'm not sure that we have any real rules about what can be a word and what can't. I'm sure in Iceland you have to petition some governing body to add a new word, something like l'Academie Francaise, with their diabolical plots to keep le walkman and le weekend out of the French language. But as Ulli has theorized, we just add words at random in the English language, at least in Hamerica. Whenever it suits his fancy, ol' Noah Webster adds some shit in his dictionary.

Now to politics. I'm not necessarily a Kerry fan, Vegard. It's more of a "lesser of two evils" type thing. I think he would be alright considering that his platform is based on reviving our butchered foreign policy. He at least seems to realize that we are not the only nation on earth. Don't know much about Nader, though I do have some Green tendencies myself. But voting for Nader is as good as voting for the Republican candidate. So let's ride the Kerry Swift boat for a few years and see where it takes us (and the world). Wish us luck in the November elections. And keep your eyes peeled for Barack Obama. He's coming...

Just Another Manic Monday

Ulli, I don't know that such drastic measures as you suggest are required. While things have died down since classes started again, I think if some of the fringe writers pick it up we'll be fine. I have trouble coming up with material at times because I feel like I merely summarize my day, days which few of you likely care about. So I'll try to post more about my thoughts and my deep considerations of the meaning of life. Got the day off today because of Columbus Day, and I was wondering where on earth we came up with the apellido Columbus in English for this nutty explorer. Now our Scandinavian friends are likely wondering why we celebrate Columbus at all when Leif Ericsson was first, but I propose that we celebrate the Irish instead. This proposal is not without reason. There is evidence that St. Brendan traveled to the Americas in the 5th or 6th century in a small boat called a currach. These boats are still used in some small fishing communities on Ireland's west coast. I, myself, was doubtful of this claim after seeing the currachs in Ireland, but apparently in the 1990s a man sailed in a currach from Ireland's west coast to Canada, proving that St. Brendan's voyage was possible. We could have avoided all of my confusion about the roots of "Columbus" by simply calling today "Brendan Day."

Watching "Killing Hitler" right now on the History channel. The Brits are trying to determine what would have resulted had they used a sniper to assassinate Hitler at the Berghof in Bavaria. Also in the process of making plans for a visit to Ireland, but it's so damned expensive. Might be venturing over for a wedding next September or October. Nothing definite yet.

Do they show the Presidential debates on the other side of the pond? I found the second one more interesting because the candidates seemed to be going for the throat instead of beating around the bush. The debates aren't really meant for people like me, though. I made up my mind long ago, so I tend to only hear one side of the debates. I suppose we'll find out the future of the US in a few weeks now.

People

Ok I was checking out the last few posts. This site has been kind of dyeing once again, so what can we do ... Bring it to life one more time!!! The people who came in the last time haven't really written anything since then and most of the others haven't done to much. I was wondering if there is interest in weekly post that way we can divide the post to certain week days so I would do Monday, Tim Tuesday, Adam Wednesday and etc.

Me personally really don't want this to die off.

So tell me what you think and what we could do. I guess I'll have an interesting blog later this week but we'll see.

Later,
Úlli

Take that Norway

Hey finally W has said something sensible...

Leif Erikson Day, 2004 By the President of the United States of America A Proclamation
More than 1,000 years ago, Leif Erikson led his crew on a journey across the Atlantic, becoming the first European known to have set foot on North American soil. Every October, we honor this courageous Viking explorer, his historic voyage, and the rich heritage of Nordic Americans.

Immigrants from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden and their descendants have made great contributions to our Nation in the fields of business, politics, the arts, education, agriculture, and other areas. Nordic Americans have also made a significant mark on our country's society and culture, and have helped to establish and define America's most cherished principles. Their energy and spirit have inspired others, and their courage, skill, and determination have played an important role in the development of our country. Today, millions of people in the United States trace their origins to these Nordic countries, and their contributions to America make our country stronger and better.

On this day, we also recognize our longstanding ties to these nations that were home to the ancestors of many Americans. Together, we continue to work to advance prosperity, expand freedom, and increase stability and security in Europe and elsewhere in the world.

To honor Leif Erikson, the courageous son of Iceland and grandson of Norway, and to celebrate our citizens of Nordic-American heritage, the Congress, by joint resolution (Public Law 88-566) approved on September 2, 1964, has authorized and requested the President to proclaim October 9 of each year as "Leif Erikson Day."
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim October 9, 2004, as Leif Erikson Day. I call upon all Americans to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and programs to honor our rich Nordic-American heritage.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this seventh day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and twenty-ninth.

GEORGE W. BUSH

Hungary

Hey Hey,

Ok finally on Thursday I got on my plane and stayed there for 4 hours and 7 minutes. Right after I met my cousin and we drove to Lily's dormitory where there was a party. I got more drunk than you should for only drinking for 3 hours but not that drunk really. I watch this incredibly hot girl kicking everybody's ass in pool... Very nice. Then I had to sleep on the most horrible mattress for starters it look horrible, it wasn't comfortable and I didn't have any blanket nor a pillow ... Only a square meter long towel to cover myself. I woke up a lot due to the cold and also when the kids were going to school... Not very nice.

The day after I had lunch with Lily and then left for my cousins city Debrecen almost 3 hours away from Budapest it was quite nice though I was tired and we talked about a lot of stuff on the way. So it was Friday and we went out for drinks with my cousins roommate and two of their friends all of them Icelandic... There was nothing going on and I found out that the party days are Tuesday through Saturday and obviously Friday wasn't´t one of the biggest. The reason I was told is that the students who don't live in Debrecen go home on Friday afternoons and do rather study in the weekends and party the other days. So we ended up watching ER at my cousins home.

That wasn't too bad since the day after was taken early and we went to some really big market which comes by twice a year. I bought a pair of football shoes for 10 euro's which I think is a bargain and if they come out well then I'm lucky. Then I went to mall and bought other two pairs and since buying three pairs of shoes I felt more dandy. The night we had 8 people party with 4 from Iceland and 4 Israel a combination I have never experienced, unlike the last time I went to a party with an Israeli we didn't get into the Israeli Palestine conflict which was a good thing.

I got very drunk and took some pictures of nothing which I deleted from the camera before putting them on Walkers website. The day after I had another day of checking out Debrecen and bought stuff and in the night we went to the biggest Supermarket I've ever been to and additionally it was open 24 hours so it was nothing compared to Barcelona. We bought two movies and watched them until 3:30 in the morning. At 4:40 I woke up because I was being picked up and we drove to Budapest for 3 hours to get on my plane. There were very few people on the plane so I had three seats and slept most of the time, the problem I had went I came out was that I had to deal with the FA thing but at 18 I fell a sleep and didn't wake up until 7 a clock in the morning.

This week I have 3 exams (one in 10 minutes) and next week also a few so Ill be busy.

see you around,
Úlli
